Production

Development

Following the release of Siva's Viswasam (2019), rumors surfaced that Suriya and Siva will collaborate on a movie produced by Studio Green's K. E. Gnanavel Raja. The project, which was first known as Suriya 39, was officially confirmed in April 2019 as Suriya's 39th movie, with production set to begin following Soorarai Pottru (2020). There were plans to cast Nayanthara opposite Suriya in a family drama set in a village, somewhat like Viswasam. But there were delays because Siva had promised to helm Rajinikanth's Annaatthe (2021). Suriya 39 eventually changed into Jai Bhim (2021), bringing the project's construction to a halt.

Pre-production

Preproduction on Siva's movie starring Suriya started in January 2021, but the epidemic caused a lengthy pause. By September, sets were built in 's EVP Film City. Devi Sri Prasad was selected despite the first news about the composer. Due to its size, the project changed hands and was renamed Suriya 42 when it was launched in August 2022 under UV Creations. Nishadh Yusuf joined as an editor and Vetri as a cinematographer. The September motion poster unveiled it as a 3D period action movie set in April 2023 and titled Kanguva. Following filming, there were talks on a sequel, which G. Dhananjayan revealed in late April.

Suriya will have 13 different looks in the movie, breaking his previous record of 10 in Ayan (2009). For one of Suriya's period looks, makeup artist Ranjith Ambady took inspiration from the 2006 film Apocalypto. For the part, Suriya also lost five kilograms of weight. In September 2022, Disha Patani and Suriya are confirmed to make their Tamil debuts together. Anandaraj, Redin Kingsley, Kovai Sarala, and Yogi Babu all have supporting parts. In later schedules, Ravi Raghavendra and K. S. Ravikumar joined the cast; B. S. Avinash joined in April 2023. In July 2023, Bobby Deol signed on as the antagonist, citing language acquisition as a challenge for his Tamil debut role. During this time, Natarajan Subramaniam was also portrayed as an antagonist.

Filming

After Suriya wrapped up other commitments, the film's November 2021 filming date was pushed out to July 2022. After a puja ceremony on August 24, 2022, in Chennai, actual filming got underway with a five-day initial schedule. On September 20, the second schedule, which included 250 extras in a huge stunt sequence and Disha Patani, began in Goa. Shooting was limited to India, even though plans called for Sri Lanka. For his upcoming schedule, which included action scenes in Ennore, Chennai, and EVP Film City, Suriya trained for a six-pack appearance. Using the Alexa Super 35 and Alexa LF cameras, several action scenes were captured on camera. After some minor difficulties owing to injuries, the final schedule was shifted from Kodaikanal to Rajahmundry and Bangkok, with a conclusion in January 2024.

Post-production

In , post-production got underway in late June 2023, with a primary focus on visual effects under Harihara Suthan's supervision. It is anticipated that the lengthy CGI process will take several months to complete. On February 14, 2024, Suriya gave Siva and the technical team a final edit of the movie and praised their work. Previsualization, color grading, and digital intermediate are all being worked on concurrently. On February 21, Suriya started dubbing for his portions at Aadnah Arts, Gnanavel Raja's new post-production studio in Mumbai.

Music

Devi Sri Prasad wrote the movie's music and in his fifth with Suriya and his second with Siva. The Saregama company purchased the music rights. On July 23, 2024, Suriya's 49th birthday, the first single, “Fire Song,” was released.

Marketing

On July 23, 2023, at midnight, the first look at the film and a 94-second peek video showcasing Suriya's appearance from the period portions were released in honor of his birthday. Within a day, the teaser had 30 million views, with praise going to its setting and images. On January 16, 2024, a second look poster featuring Suriya in a modern avatar was released. The character poster for Bobby Deol was unveiled on his birthday, January 27, 2024. The movie's sizzle reel was unveiled on March 19, 2024.

Release

Kanguva is scheduled to make its global theatrical debut on October 10, 2024, coinciding with . It is going to be accessible in IMAX, 3D, and 2D formats. Due to intensive post-production, the release, which was originally scheduled for early 2024, was delayed. With the goal of increasing the movie's potential at the box office and appeal on a worldwide scale, it will be released in 38 languages. Pen Studios obtained the rights for Hindi theatrical , while KVN Productions obtained the rights for Kannada. Pre-release sales of the movie are allegedly over ₹500 crore, which is a record for Tamil cinema. Amazon Prime Video has also acquired the digital streaming rights for South Indian languages.
