Introduction

Hemant Soren, Prominent Jharkhand politician was born on August 10, 1975. He held the office of Chief Minister for two terms, from 2013 to 2014 and from 2019 to 2024. He represents Barhait in the state assembly and serves as the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha's acting president. In a contentious land issue that he and opposition parties claim was politically driven, Soren was facing arrest on January 31, 2024. He was freed on June 28, 2024, after posting bail.

Early life

Roopi and Shibu Soren, the former chief minister of Jharkhand and founder-president of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, welcomed Hemant into the world at his birth at Nemara, Ramgarh district, (now in Jharkhand). As the third kid, he has two brothers and a sister. Durga Soren, Anjali Soren, and Basant Soren—who also holds the position of MLA for the Dumka constituency—are his siblings. Hemant Soren completed his intermediate schooling at Bihar's Patna High School. His affidavit, submitted to the Election Commission, states that he enrolled in Mechanical Engineering at BIT Mesra, Ranchi, for a limited period of time but did not finish the study.

The Rajya Sabha was presided over by Hemant Soren from June 24, 2009, to January 4, 2010. On December 23, 2009, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly (MLA), marking the start of his political career. He then held the position of Jharkhand's from September 11, 2010, until January 8, 2013.

Chief Minister

On July 15, 2013, Hemant Soren was originally appointed as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, with the backing of the Congress and RJD, after the President's rule was removed. In December 2019, he was sworn in as Chief Minister after winning reelection.

Leader of Opposition

Pathalgadi movement against tribal land law amendments

Hemant Soren was adamantly against the 2016 modifications to the Chhota Nagpur Tenancy Act. The Santhal Pargana Tenancy Act that sought to permit the of Adivasi land for government projects and its use for purposes other than agriculture. He said that the government was supporting land grabers at the Global Investors Summit. The opposition parties' lobbying combined with his protests caused the bills to be withdrawn in 2017. In addition, Soren has been outspoken in his opposition to the Direct Benefit Transfer in PDS. It has called for a CBI investigation into the hunger death of a girl. Following Bihar's lead, he is in favor of outlawing alcohol in Jharkhand due to its detrimental effects on tribal populations.

Chief Minister

Hemant Soren assumed the role of Chief Minister of Jharkhand on December 29, 2019, following the triumph of the , INC, RJD coalition in the state legislature . Later, on January 31, 2024, he was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on suspicion of engaging in a , which caused controversy.

Awards and honors

In 2019, Soren was bestowed with the of Award in recognition of his exceptional service to the Jharkhand constituencies of Dumka and Barhait. On January 20, 2020, at Vigyan Bhavan in , the award was given by former president Pranab Mukherjee.

Personal life

Kalpana Soren and Soren are married, and the couple has two sons. He has a younger brother named Basant Soren and an older sister named Anjali Soren. Durga Soren was the late brother of his father. He finds inspiration in the bravery of the tribal warrior Birsa Munda, whom he really admires. One of the well-known founders of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha is his father, Shibu Soren.
