Introduction
Sushil Kumar Modi, an Indian politician affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party, was born in Bihar and raised there. He served as a member of parliament in the Rajya Sabha until his death on May 13, 2024. He was Bihar’s Finance Minister as well as Deputy Chief Minister. In July 2011, he chaired the Empowered Committee of State Finance Ministers for the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). He was also a lifelong member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
Early life and education
Moti Lal Modi and Ratna Devi welcomed Sushil into the world on January 5, 1952. He studied at Patna Science College, where he earned a B.Sc. (Hons) in Botany in 1973. He temporarily enrolled in Patna University’s M.Sc. Botany program before leaving to join Jai Prakash Narayan’s social movement. On August 13, 1986, Modi wed Jessie George, a Christian Keralite from Mumbai. After falling in love, they were joined in research studies and went on to have two boys, Utkarsh Tathagat and Akshay Amritanshu. Jessie taught collegiate courses.
Early political career
At Patna University, where he participated actively in student politics, Sushil Modi got his start in politics. He battled against the MISA Act, was imprisoned for 19 months during the Emergency, and went on to spearhead campaigns against choices such as the illegal migration from Bangladesh and the designation of Urdu as the second language of Bihar.
Political career
After winning the Patna Central Assembly seat, Sushil Modi began active politics in 1990. Formerly the Leader of Opposition till 2004, he was the Chief Whip of the BJP Bihar Legislative Party. In an attempt to discredit Lalu Prasad Yadav, he started the Fodder Scam PIL. Bhagalpur native Modi joined the Lok Sabha in 2004. His political scene in Bihar was significantly shaped by his holding of government offices. His contribution to the fall of the JDU-RJD Grand Alliance government in 2017 was crucial. He was unanimously elected from Bihar to the Rajya Sabha in 2020, and he is well-known for his lengthy time as Nitish Kumar’s deputy.
Political views
Modi was against same-sex marriage becoming legal in India, calling those who supported it “left-liberals” who wanted to “imitate the West.” He contended that it would upset the delicate balance of India’s personal laws.
Illness and death
On April 3, 2024, Modi disclosed his diagnosis of cancer and withdrew from the BJP’s Lok Sabha campaign. He died on May 13, 2024, at the age of 72. His crucial part in the BJP’s victory in Bihar was acknowledged by Narendra Modi.
