Early life

In Tauranga, New Zealand, on August 8, 1990, Kane Stuart Williamson was born. His mother Sandra was a representative basketball player, and his father Brett played club and under-17 cricket. He has three older sisters who are all renowned volleyball players, as well as a twin brother named Logan. Dane Cleaver, his cousin, played cricket for New Zealand internationally, and his grandmother Joan Williamson-Orr was the mayor of Taupō. When Williamson was fourteen, he participated in senior representative cricket and, at sixteen, first-class cricket. Before he left Tauranga Boys’ College, he was head boy and had amassed forty centuries.

Domestic career

Northern Districts

At the age of seventeen, Kane Stuart Williamson made his Northern Districts in 2007 and has continued to play for them throughout his domestic career in New Zealand. In the League Twenty20 on September 19, 2014, he made his first T20 century—101* in 49 balls—to help Northern Districts defeat Cape Cobras.

English county cricket

Williamson committed to the 2011 English county season with Gloucestershire. He joined Yorkshire in 2013, and the following year they won the . Though Yorkshire decided to extend Aaron Finch’s , he still intended to make a comeback in 2015. Williamson participated in some of Yorkshire’s seasons in 2016 and 2018.

Indian Premier League

Williamson committed to the 2011 English county season with Gloucestershire. He joined Yorkshire in 2013, and the following year they won the County Championship. Though Yorkshire decided to extend Aaron Finch’s contract, he still intended to make a comeback in 2015. Williamson participated in some of Yorkshire’s seasons in 2016 and 2018.

International career

Williamson, then 17 years old, guided the New Zealand Under-19 squad to the 2008 World Cup semifinals in Malaysia. Despite not playing, he was included in the March 2010 New Zealand Test squad. On August 10, 2010, Williamson played his first match against India, struggling at first with two ducks. In a match against Bangladesh on October 14, 2010, he made his first ODI century and became the youngest hundred in New Zealand history. On November 4, 2010, Williamson made his Test cricket debut against India, amassing 131 runs and became the eighth New Zealander to reach a century in his maiden match.

Rising through the ranks

With Williamson’s 161* in June 2014, New Zealand defeated the West Indies in an uncommon Test series. He was cleared in December despite a concern about his bowling action. He was named captain for the ODIs and T20s against Pakistan, and he performed exceptionally well in 2015, breaking the record for most Test runs in a calendar year and becoming the fastest New Zealander to reach 3,000 Test runs. NZC gave him the 2014–15 T20 Player of the Year title.

Captaincy

Williamson assumed leadership of New Zealand in all formats in March of 2016. Against every Test nation, he became the fastest player to achieve a century, setting records in the process. In June 2021, he guided New Zealand to win in the ICC World Test Championship. Despite his incredible performance, New Zealand fell to Australia in the final of the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Post-captaincy

Williamson resigned as the captain of New Zealand’s Test team in December 2022. Among his many accomplishments were his fifth double century and his 25 Test century, which made him the first batter from New Zealand. When he made his 26th century against England in February 2023, he surpassed all other Test run scorers in New Zealand. He scored his sixth double century and 28th century in March 2023.
