Initial years

In their inaugural IPL season in 2013, Sunrisers Hyderabad kept 20 players from the Deccan Chargers. Under the of Cameron White and Kumar Sangakkara, they made it to the playoffs but lost. Playing part of the season in the UAE, they finished sixth in 2014 under the of Darren Sammy and . David Warner was appointed captain in 2015, and Muttiah Muralitharan came on board as coach. Once more, they placed sixth, with Warner taking home the Orange Cap.

Maiden title and consecutive playoff appearances

Bhuvneshwar Kumar was awarded the Purple Cap after SRH won their first IPL championship in 2016 under David Warner. Warner took home the Orange Cap and Kumar kept the Purple Cap as they placed third in 2017. With SRH finishing in second place and an Orange Cap in 2018, Kane Williamson assumed leadership as captain. SRH finished sixth in 2019, with Warner winning the Orange Cap once more. Williamson continued as captain, but Warner made a . Reinstated as captain in 2020, Warner helped SRH advance to the playoffs, where they were eliminated in the second qualifying round.

Struggles

To make room for J Suchith, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and , SRH dismissed five players ahead of the 2021 auction while keeping 22 players. After David Warner was replaced as captain in the middle of the season by Kane Williamson, they brought back Tom Moody. While releasing a few players, they kept Kane Williamson in 2022. Head coach Brian Lara succeeded Aiden Markram as captain in 2023. Only four of SRH's games were won. 2024 saw Pat Cummins take over as captain and Daniel Vettori succeed Lara as head coach. Even though RCB's 262/7 became the greatest T20 score in a defeat, SRH still managed to make an IPL record with their 287/3 against them.

Home ground

The Sunrisers Hyderabad, who play their home games at the 40,000-seat Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad, Telangana, are owned by the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA). The Dr. Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA–VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam served as their backup home field in 2015. In 2017, SRH used their main home ground for both the season's opening and closing games. Owing to site modifications in 2019, Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium—which also won awards for best pitch and ground during the season—hosted the IPL final.

Sunrisers Hyderabad has a long history of dominance, and this rivalry with Royal Challengers Bengaluru is getting stronger. Hyderabad teams, including the Deccan Chargers and Sunrisers, have frequently interfered with RCB's campaign. The IPL finals in 2009 and 2016 are two notable wins. Kane Williamson's performance in the 2020 IPL eliminated RCB. SRH overcame RCB in a difficult 2021, which hurt their prospects of making the playoffs. IPL 2022 saw SRH win handily. SRH broke RCB's record in the IPL 2024, scoring 287 and 266 to increase RCB's chances of making the playoffs.
